WESTMONT TRACK & FIELD/XC RESIDENTIAL SUMMER CAMP
July 13-16, 2016
We invite you to spend a week of your summer at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California to experience a one of a kind Track & Field/XC Camp. As a camper you will learn the fundamental techniques and training methods to GET BETTER in your events. Westmont College coaches, along with Team USA Athletes and Coaches will serve as the primary event specialists, while current Westmont student-athletes will serve as counselors and “Fun” Directors for the 2016 camp.
Whether you are a high school senior with multiple seasons of experience in Track & Field/Cross Country, or just beginning your career, our coaching staff is equipped to assist you in reaching your goals. This year’s camp will feature instructors/coaches ready to serve you in every event area within the sport. A unique feature of the Westmont Camp includes a Heptathlon/Decathlon section for athletes interested in pursuing the combined events in college. Defending USA National Champion, Barbara Nwaba and her Santa Barbara Track Club teammates will also serve coaching roles within the camp.
In addition to elite level instruction, campers will get to experience the best that Santa Barbara has to offer. From an afternoon at the beach, to touring historic State Street; there is something fun for every camper who attends the 2016 camp! Come experience Track & Field at one of the Nation’s Premier Christian Colleges.

HEAD COACH: RUSSELL SMELLEY Smelley@westmont.edu
Coach Russell Smelley has served as the head coach in Track and Field and Cross Country at Westmont College since his arrival in 1979. His tenure has produced 75 NAIA All-Americans and National Champions with a total of 168 All American Awards. Additionally Coach Smelley’s teams have earned numerous NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete Certificates. In 1994, Smelley was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year. Coach Smelley was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2016, Smelley was named the USTFCCCA West Region Coach of the Year. Coach Smelley received the National Coach of Character Award in 2015 from the NAIA.
ASSISTANT COACH: JOSH PRIESTER Jpriester@westmont.edu
Coach Josh Priester serves as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Westmont College in addition to being the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Track Club. Priester works with the combined events and jumps for both the Westmont and SBTC programs. Coach Priester has served on USA National Team staffs as both an assistant and head coach. In 2015, Priester coached 5 athletes to top-10 finishes in the United States in the heptathlon and decathlon, including the 2015 USA Outdoor Champion and 2016 Indoor Champion, Barbara Nwaba.
ASSISTANT COACH: BARBARA NWABA
Barbara Nwaba is currently one of the top ranked heptathletes in the world with a personal best score of 6,500 points. Nwaba is the reigning USA National Champion in the women’s heptathlon (2015) and pentathlon (2016). In her most recent World Championship, she earned a 4th place finish, the highest finish by an American in nearly a decade. Nwaba has been a member of the Westmont coaching staff, and continues to train at the college with the Santa Barbara Track Club. Nwaba is a native of Los Angeles, California and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2012.
ASSISTANT COACH: TOM FITZSIMONS
Tom FitzSimons joins the camp staff for the first time in 2015. FitzSimons is a Three Time USA Qualifier in the Decathlon and secured a Bronze Medal finish at the 2014 USA Outdoor Championships as well as a 4th place finish at the 2015 USA Championships. FitzSimons currently coaches the pole vaulters at Westmont. A native of Hamden, Connecticut, FitzSimons graduated from Mt. Saint Mary’s in 2012.

ASSISTANT COACH: LINDSAY SCHWARTZ
Lindsay Schwartz enters her third year as a Coach at the Westmont Track & Field Camp. A Three time USA National Team Member, Schwartz has been with the Santa Barbara Track Club since 2013. Coach Schwartz is a two time international medalist in the heptathlon, earning a bronze medal in the 2013 Thorpe Cup and a silver medal at the 2014 Pan American Combined Events Championships. A native of Watertown, Wisconsin, Schwartz graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2012.
